Welcome to de Madres a Madres

De Madres a Madres, Inc. is located in the heart of Houston, Texas and north of interstate 10.  De Madres was formed in 1992 to address the growing problem of lead poisoning of children in the community.  In 2003 National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) funded de Madres a Madres’ Project Coal (Communities Organized against Asthma & Lead).  De Madres a Madres, Inc. partnered with the University of Texas Medical center, Galveston on this project.  Major Goals: 1) directly reach  Latino families with young children - and in particular mothers - to organize communities and raise awareness of childhood lead poisoning risk factors and neurotoxin effects in target at risk zip codes; 2)  promote blood lead level screening for at-risk children in targeted neighborhoods; 3) facilitate connection of residents in target zip codes with City of Houston residential inspection and environmental lead mitigation services; 4) provide models of positive culturally appropriate risk communication and civic engagement to improve public health.
